One technique of the sales world that has been around for ages is the cold call. It is also one of the most heavily derided! One of the main reasons why it is made fun of so mercilessly is plain and simple: most people don't like receiving cold calls. In fact, plenty of people don't really enjoy having anything "sold" to them at all! You have probably been at the wrong end of a bad cold call once or twice yourself. And by knowing this, you already know the biggest key to cold calling: Do not do it the way everyone else does! If someone automatically thinks, "Oh, gosh, here's another cold call," you have already lost the first battle. Instead, you need to know how to cold call differently.

Firstly, understand that you need to put in some research. A little research can go a long way, and can save you a lot of time. With research, you can make sure you are calling people who might be interested in your product or service, instead of just calling people blindly. While there are a lot of ways to gather good information for cold calls, one of the best ways is research and questionnaires of your own.

When you call, you have to have confidence. One of the best ways to improve confidence - in fact, one of the best ways to improve your overall success - is to have a script. And once you have this script in place, stick to it! This script should not be word-for-word, but rather, it should provide you with a general outline of what you want to say and the order in which you want to say it. Over time, you can refine this script. Add things onto the script when you find that they work. When you find that something does not work, take it out.

Down the road, as you have more experience under your belt, you can begin to customize your script depending on who you are talking to. Soften things up a bit if you are speaking with a small business owner. When speaking with a high-ranking executive, put on a more formal air. The more you cold call, the better you will be able to adapt.

Some companies have decided to cut cold calls out of their strategy altogether, claiming that they no longer work. But with the proper use of cold calls, they can actually benefit your business a lot!
