Most American small businesses end in failure, despite the fact that many people dream of one day running a successful small business of their own. In fact, if you look ten years down the road from the start date of most small businesses, less than 5% of them are still around. If you become aware of the mistakes so many small businesses make, you can set yourself up for success with your own small business instead of setting yourself up for failure.

Poor location: If you have a small business, chances are you will probably have a storefront, and location will be important. Because of the anticipation of getting started, too many people jump into their business before it is truly ready to go. Too many people ignore the fact that once they choose a location, they are likely to remain in that location, and instead of waiting for the "right place" to open up, they take whatever is available. Another reason people often take a poor location is because it is less expensive; but it is worth paying the extra money to be in a good location!

Saving money: "Saving money" on a location is not the only way small businesses try to save money early on. Lots of small businesses also cut corners in the way they present or even create their product, and this hurts them in the long run. But you have to spend money in creating and presenting your product if you want people to spend money on the product itself!

Name recognition: One reason why big brand names continue to do well is because they are already big brand names! When people know a product, they are more likely to feel comfortable using it; this means that small businesses need to do what they can to create name recognition. You can begin to stir up name recognition yourself by doing promotions, by advertising, and by creating an online presence; in fact, you can even combine all these elements together.

Your dream of running a small business that sticks around for a while is certainly attainable. But first, you need to understand that important steps you must take and mistakes you must avoid if you want to make it happen!
