There has been a large push for people to consume more omega fatty acids. One way to do this is eating fish and taking fish oils pills but another option is flax seed. Flax seeds create oil that is known as linseed / flax seed oil. Linseed oil has been used for many years for linoleum flooring, paints, and furniture polish, and now more recently we are finding it's health benefits. Flax can be used similar to grains but technically it isn't a grain. Flax can be ground into flour or left whole for use in whole grain bread. Whole flax seeds can be kept around for months keeping their nutritional integrity. Ground flax is only good for a short amoutn of time, because the oil can go rancid quickly. Having a grain mill may be the best option for making your own flour. Flax has a high protein compared to wheat and is higher in omega 3 fatty acid. Omega fatty acids are very important for our bodies. It is believe that omega 3 helps to fight against cancer, help to protect our hearts, and overall aiding of our health. If you want to learn more about the health benefits a good read is The Healing Power Of Flax. This book makes very a very compelling argument about flax’s health benefits. If you don’t relish the idea of having to keep a grain mill and flax seed around your house there are plenty of flax seed supplements that you can purchase. Or you can easily find pre ground flax seed also but this should be stored in the refrigerator to keep the oils from going rancid as quickly as they will if they are stored in the cupboard.
