Different Styles of Managers

Managing employees can be a difficult task. Each employee has different things that motivate them. They also each respond to different management techniques. The management style you choose can be one of many. The buddy, Mr Cool and the micromanager are all examples. The most well rounded of all types of managing styles is the coach, even though each type has positives and negatives.

The coach doesn’t employ extreme management techniques like many of the others. A few examples are how the micromanager nit picks every little task and how Mr Cool only cares about his own image. Coaches don't use either of these methods. Instead of doing what is best for them on a personal level, the coach will do what is in the best interest of the team. The coach also lets some day to day operations go unmanaged on their part. Decision making responsibilities are given to the employees by the coach in order to help them grow.

The way this type of manager interacts with each employee is one of their best traits. If a small task goes undone, they won't get on top of an employee for it. Instead the coach will do what their name implies; coach the employee to success. This action benefits every employee on the team. One way is the confidence employees will have. They will know that if there is something they fail to do, the coach will help them through it by teaching them why they failed. A team environment is thus created because all employees will feel important to the success of the team and the goal they are working towards.

The coach does have some negatives though. This style goes too easy on some employees who need a harsher style. Coaching doesn't work with every type of employee. They also may fail to single out outstanding employees, instead choosing to reward the entire team as a whole. In reality, the coach may be the best definitive style, but it is always a great idea to blend some management styles together to create one of your own.
